Gastric Sleeve Surgery

A sleeve gastrectomy is a procedure that decreases the amount of food you can eat by reducing the size of your stomach. Many experts now consider the sleeve gastrectomy as the new gold standard for weight loss surgery. It can help you lose weight without the nutritional risks of gastric bypass surgery.
The surgeon creates a small stomach “sleeve” using a stapling
device. This sleeve will typically hold 50 ml to 150 ml and is about the size of a banana. The rest of the stomach is removed.
This procedure works in part by restricting the amount of food
(and therefore calories) that can be eaten without bypassing the intestines and absorbed.

In addition, by removing the fundus which is the top part
of the stomach there is a rapid reduction in the
hormone “Ghrelin” which is thought to stimulate appetite.
You will feel less emotional triggers to over eat.

What is the Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery, or sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical weight-loss procedure that reduces the
stomach to approximately 25% of its original size by removing a substantial portion of it. The remaining
part forms a narrow, tube-like “sleeve” that links the esophagus to the small intestine.
The surgery typically takes less than an hour to perform and is done in a  minimally invasive way with a
camera and small incisions. This allows you have to recover faster and minimizes and post-surgical pain.

Today, sleeve gastrectomy is one of the fastest-growing weight loss surgeries in North America and Asia.
The sleeve sleeve gastrectomy has helped many patients control their diabetes, sleep apnea,
hypertension and cholesterol.

How Does Gastric Sleeve Surgery Work?

During gastric sleeve surgery, the surgeon forms a narrow stomach “sleeve” using a specialized stapling
device. This new sleeve typically holds between 50 ml to 150 ml of food—about the size and shape of a
banana. The remaining portion of the stomach is permanently removed.

This procedure aids weight loss by limiting the volume of food—and therefore calories—you can
consume, without rerouting the intestines. Additionally, removing the fundus which is part of the
stomach causes a significant drop in the hormone “Ghrelin,” which is known to trigger hunger. As a
result, you will feel full more quickly and stay satisfied longer.
